Visit this year’s Lustrum in the Netherlands and invite the Guest of Honour to a pint – me! [June 19-21]

It is my privilege and an absolute pleasure to have been announced the Guest of Honour with the Tolkien Society Unquendor (Netherlands) with this year’s Lustrum, a spectacular festivity that is so spectacular it only happens every five years!
And yes, ten years ago I was there as a participant in the beautiful cities of the Hague and Leiden!
This time I have incredibly big shoes to fill – some of the GoHs before me were Dimitra Fimi, Thomas Honegger, Tom Shippey, and Rayner Unwin! [GULP!]
This fantastic weekend will take place at the beautiful Castle De Berckt in Baarlo.

My talk will be… on Tolkien in the 21st Century!
Where do we go from here, Middle-earth?
Tolkien in the 21st century has been dominated by one cultural phenomen: the Lord of the Rings film trilogy. No other adaptation has come close to its success and continuing influence.
Much else has happened and nobody really knows what the future holds but we seem to be getting more of the same.
Is the franchise then all that is left? Will people still read Tolkien in another twenty-five years? Will literary societies and their volunteer work have a say in the appreciation of Tolkien’s life and works? I would like to make some proposals for volunteer fandom.
And I will be out and about, talking to wonderful people and listening to amazing talks!
